Your Information

Inpatient Rehabilitation in a hospital setting is for individuals who need an intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program. Inpatient Rehab is designed for individuals with physical and/or cognitive impairments, including those who have experienced traumatic injury, stroke, amputation or debilitating disease.

Eligibility

In order to qualify for hospital-based Inpatient Rehab, you must:

  • Medically require hospitalization following traumatic injury, surgery, stroke or amputation
  • Require intense therapies
  • Be medically stable
  • Require 24-hour nursing care
  • Participate in three hours of therapy daily

Care

Inpatient rehab patients receive a minimum of three hours per day, five days a week intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy. Therapy is provided by a rehab specialist who incorporates advanced technologies and approaches. A physician who specializes in rehabilitation oversees all care, assesses goals and progress. Nursing care is provided 24-hours a day, seven days a week by registered nurses and well as Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses.

Partnerships

In Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Chelsea, we partner with other organizations to offer robust inpatient rehabilitation options.

Our Grand Rapids and Muskegon Hospitals partner with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Chelsea Hospital is a joint venture with University of Michigan Health and the inpatient rehabilitation program works closely with U-M. The U-M physical medicine and rehab physicians oversee care in the Chelsea inpatient rehab unit.
