Our experienced physicians at Trinity Health Michigan perform thrombectomy to remove blood clots from your arteries or veins before serious damage occurs.

What is a Thrombectomy?

Thrombectomy is a procedure that removes a blood clot (thrombus) from an artery or vein with the goal of restoring circulation and avoiding tissue damage. This is typically performed using a catheter or aspiration (suction).

Thrombectomy can be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis, depending on the specific procedure and your individual circumstances.

After administering anesthesia, a vascular specialist will insert a catheter into your vein through a small incision. The catheter is then moved beyond the clot and inflates a small balloon attached to its tip. Once inflated, the catheter is slowly pulled back out of the vein, simultaneously removing the clot with it.
