Donor Champion

For people who need a kidney transplant, navigating and managing their health as well as asking friends, coworkers, community members, and family to consider donating their kidney can be a daunting and uncomfortable task. We encourage our patients to identify a “Donor Champion,” someone who is willing to educate others about the patient’s condition and about transplant options to encourage living donation. Donor Champions take the lead on finding potential living donors so their loved one in need of a kidney can focus on their transplant evaluation and their health.

Benefits of a Donor Champion

A Donor Champion can be a friend, family member, coworker, or anyone able to offer emotional support to a patient in need of a kidney transplant. Donor Champions offer hope and help ease the burden of finding a living kidney donor.

Donor Champion Process

Patients in the transplant evaluation process or on the waiting list are encouraged to identify one or two Donor Champion(s) and discuss the role with them. Donor Champions will then call the Donor Team at 616-685-6899 to learn more. Our team will send the Donor Champion(s) educational materials as well as a video to watch. The Donor Team at Trinity Health Grand Rapids is available and will check in to help support, troubleshoot, and encourage Donor Champions along the way.
